Before You Join Us

Please reach us at saltybirdsflock@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Our walks are slow, relaxed, and beginner-friendly.
We move at an easy pace, pause often, and blend birding, quiet observation, and light guidance. Some moments are social, others are quiet; you’re free to engage in whatever way feels natural.

Not at all. Most people are completely new.

You don’t need to know anything about birds or have any yoga experience. We guide you gently, and there’s no pressure to do anything a certain way.

  •  Comfortable walking shoes (trail shoes even better)
  • Water
  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Trail appropriate clothing (summer: light pants, t-shirt, hat winter: layers)
  • Phone or camera (optional)
  • Binoculars are welcome but not required
  • We usually have a few extra on hand. Merlin Bird ID app on phone (free and awesome to identify birds).

You absolutely can, and most people do.

Salty Birds is designed to feel easy to step into, whether you come solo or with someone. There’s no pressure to socialize, but connection tends to happen naturally.

We keep an eye on conditions and will notify you if we need to reschedule. Light mist can actually make for a really beautiful experience, but safety and comfort always come first. We walk in the rain and cold but not if there is a dangerous weather alert.

Most walks last about 2 hours depending on the location and flow of the group. We always try to keep it around 2 miles and slow paced with several stops and rests.  We also start with some breathing and meditation and stop for some stretching and slow movement half-way through.

Everything we offer is designed to be approachable and welcoming. Whether it’s a walk, private event, or retreat, you don’t need any prior experience to join.

Our retreats are half-day or day experiences that combine nature walks, gentle yoga, and curated elements like local food, creative activities, or seasonal collaborations. Each one is a little different, but all are designed to feel intentional, relaxed, and meaningful.

Yes! We offer private gatherings for birthdays (“Birddays”), small groups, and special occasions. Reach out through our Private Events page and we’ll create something tailored to you. We have many families reach out to book private walks when family or friends are n town visiting.

Older children (13 years+) who enjoy being outside and can engage in a slower-paced, calm environment are welcome with an accompanying adult. Also we allow younger children for private events or family walks. We are salty and funny with our commentary so we are PG-13 fyi.

Not at all. Everything is optional, and there’s no right or wrong way to participate. You can engage as much or as little as you’d like. We are about chilling our and enjoying nature not about rules or comparing. We just be!

Reach out, we're happy to help! Contact us!

First Walk Nerves

Feeling a little unsure about joining your first walk?

 That’s completely normal.

Most people who come to a Salty Birds walk have never done anything like this before. It’s new, a little different, and it can feel uncertain at first.

You won’t be the only one.

What if I feel awkward or out of place?

You won’t. Our walks are intentionally low-pressure and relaxed. There’s no spotlight, no introductions unless you want them, and no need to “perform” or participate in any specific way.

You can talk, stay quiet, or just walk, whatever feels right that day.

What if I come alone?

Most people do! Coming solo is one of the easiest ways to experience it. You’re free to stay in your own space, and connection tends to happen naturally if you want it.

What if I’m just not sure what to expect?

That’s okay too. Think of it as time outside with a little guidance, a chance to slow down, notice more, and step away from the usual pace of things.

What Your First 5 Minutes Will Look Like

When you arrive, we’ll be there to greet you, no rush, no pressure.

People usually trickle in, take a breath, and settle into the space. You might notice the trees, the water, or the quiet before anything even begins.

We’ll gather briefly, share a few simple expectations, and invite you to ease into the experience. There’s no formal introductions unless you want them.

Then we’ll start walking, slowly.

Nothing abrupt, nothing overwhelming. Just a gentle beginning.

What the Last 5 Minutes Feel Like

As the walk comes to an end, things tend to slow down even more.

People linger a little.
There’s usually a lot of smiling.
A quiet kind of gratitude — for the time outside, for the reset, for choosing to come.

Some people chat. Some exchange numbers.
Others take a few last photos or just stand for a moment, not quite ready to leave.

It doesn’t feel rushed.

Just… complete.

Later, when you receive your photos and your Take the Woods Home With You guide, it brings you right back to the feeling of the walk.

That’s when it really settles in.
